Christian CommunityChristian Community Bible: Catholic Pastoral Edition -- intended for ordinary readers, particularly those in Third World countries. Translations from the Hebrew and Greek biblical texts are coordinated by the Pastoral Bible Foundation and published by the Claretian Missionaries. The use of ordinary language is aimed at helping readers understand the meaning of the biblical texts.Douay RheimsDouay-Rheims Bible -- The New Testament was published at Rheims (1582), the Old Testament at Douay (1609). The Douay Rheims served as the main English bible for the Catholic world for centuries. Bishop Challoner updated it extensively mid-18th century. Biblical scholar Rev. George Haydock compiled a Catholic commentary mid-19th century. This text set is from an approved 1914 U.S. printing.
That was the way the sky and earth were created and all their vast array. So the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the furniture of them.
By the seventh day the work God had done was completed, and he rested on the seventh day from all the work he had done. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made: and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done.
And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on that day he rested from all the work he had done in his creation. And he blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
These are the successive steps in the creation of the heavens and the earth. On the day that Yahweh God made the earth and the heavens,These are the generations of the heaven and the earth, when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the heaven and the earth:
there was not yet on the earth any shrub of the fields, nor had any plant yet sprung up, for Yahweh God had not made it rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the earth, And every plant of the field before it sprung up in the earth, and every herb of the ground before it grew: for the Lord God had not rained upon the earth; and there was not a man to till the earth.
but a mist went up from the earth and watered the surface of the earth. But a spring rose out of the earth, watering all the surface of the earth.
Then Yahweh God formed Man, dust drawn from the clay, and breathed into his nostrils a breath of life and Man became alive with breath. And the Lord God formed man of the slime of the earth: and breathed into his face the breath of life, and man became a living soul.
God planted a garden in Eden in the east and there he placed Man whom he had created. And the Lord God had planted a paradise of pleasure from the beginning: wherein he placed man whom he had formed.
Yahweh God caused to grow from the ground every kind of tree that is pleasing to see and good to eat, also the tree of Life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. And the Lord God brought forth of the ground all manner of trees, fair to behold, and pleasant to eat of: the tree of life also in the midst of paradise: and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
A river flowed from Eden to water the garden and from there it divided to form four main streams. And a river went out of the place of pleasure to water paradise, which from thence is divided into four heads.
The name of the first river is Pishon. It is the one that flows around all the country of Havilah where there is gold, The name of the one is Phison: that is it which compasseth all the land of Hevilath, where gold groweth.
and the gold of that country is good; bidellium and onyx stone are there. And the gold of that land is very good: there is found bdellium, and the onyx stone.
The name of the second river is Gihon. It is the one that flows around all the land of Cush. And the name of the second river is Gehon: the same is it that compasseth all the land of Ethiopia.
The name of the third river is Tigris. It is the one that flows to the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. And the name of the third river is Tigris: the same passeth along by the Assyrians. And the fourth river is Euphrates.
Yahweh God took Man and placed him in the garden of Eden to till it and take care of it.And the Lord God took man, and put him into the paradise of pleasure, to dress it, and to keep it.
Then Yahweh God gave an order to Man saying, “You may eat of every tree in the garden, And he commanded him, saying: Of every tree of paradise thou shalt eat:
but of the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, you will not eat, for on the day you eat of it, you will die.”But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat. For in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt die the death.
Yahweh God said, “It is not good for Man to be alone; I will give him a helper who will be like him.” And the Lord God said: It is not good for man to be alone: let us make him a help like unto himself.
Then Yahweh God formed from the earth all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air and brought them to Man to see what he would call them; and whatever Man called every living creature, that was its name. And the Lord God having formed out of the ground all the beasts of the earth, and all the fowls of the air, brought them to Adam to see what he would call them: for whatsoever Adam called any living creature the same is its name.
So Man gave names to all the cattle, the birds of the air and to every beast of the field. But he did not find among them a helper like himself. And Adam called all the beasts by their names, and all the fowls of the air, and all the cattle of the field: but for Adam there was not found a helper like himself.
Then Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to come over Man and he fell asleep. He took one of his ribs and filled its place with flesh. Then the Lord God cast a deep sleep upon Adam: and when he was fast asleep, he took one of his ribs, and filled up flesh for it.
The rib which Yahweh God had taken from Man he formed into a woman and brought her to the man. And the Lord God built the rib which he took from Adam into a woman: and brought her to Adam.
The man then said, “Now this is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called woman because she was taken from man.” And Adam said: This now is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man.
That is why man leaves his father and mother and is attached to his wife, and with her becomes one flesh. Wherefore a man shall leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they shall be two in one flesh.
Both the man and his wife were naked and were not ashamed. And they were both naked: to wit, Adam and his wife: and were not ashamed.
